Carolina,
How can you know NOTHING about MUSIC?! Didn't your parents listen to music at home? Don't you have friends?
Don't you even know The Beatles?!

Idog,
You are probably thinking about the Phil Colliis led later Genesis--I am talking about the OLD Genesis!

Guitar Man,
You obviously THINK you know about music.
Your LOGIC is all messed up, though--smoking something? How can you say in the same breath that you can't compare musicians and then dis a group and an entertainer?
Rush is considered one of the best groups of the 1970s by many publications.
As for comparisons, Britney is an ENTERTAINER (like Elvis or Tom Jones) not a composer. It's like comparing apples and oranges.
What's so wrong with Rush anyway? Give me some examples of your "Expertise." I challenge you!

I am mystfied.
Some people like some groups over others--that was to be expected.
Some people complained about the pop-commercialization of the later Genesis stuff.
I can see all those points.
However, some people seem to HATE Rush while others ADORE Rush. It is a very strange thing.
I'm putting this up to a vote.

Pink Floyd were perhaps at their most influential when Syd Barrett was still in the band. Along with groups like the 13th Floor Elevators, Barrett-era Floyd were the personification of psychedelia.
Led Zeppelin are undoubtedly one of the most influential bands of all time. Although initially, Jimmy Page wanted to model the band after the British folk stylings of Bert Jansch and to a lesser extent, Fairport Convention. Regardless, it's pretty hard to dismiss their importance even though the majority of the bands they influenced had little, if any, of their originality. In the end, the Ramones, the Clash and the Sex Pistols rendered even Zeppelin's best work irrelevant.
Genesis was at their creative peak while Peter Gabriel was still in the band. After he left and Phil Collins took over as frontman, the group largely abandoned their progressive rock roots and persued more commercial endeavors.
Rush is hands down one of the most overrated bands of all time. Little more than a pale imitation of Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Rush injected the right-wing libertarianism of Ayn Rand into their pretentious concept albums. Not very cool, and definitely not rock and roll.

I'm going to answer keeping all the bands and their works pre 1980, since I don't own or listen to any of the works of the ones that survived long past then.
The one taking fourth place is Genesis. I very much appreciated what they had to contribute but I was just never a Genesis fan, and still not, Gabriel or Collins.
Third place goes to Led Zeppelin. Pure rock, and pure soul. They paved the road for many bands inspired by Page's ideas and sound design. I could pick ten Zeppelin songs that I like, but ultimately only one or two keep me coming back for more.
And the runner up is,,,,,,,,,Pink Floyd. Dark side of the moon comes to mind the most. It's their one single album I can listen to from front to back without skipping several tracks, but that's not to leave out the amazing musical accomplishments they've made throughout their career.
Rush gets first pick from me for many reasons. One is the shear volume that they cranked out with a consistency in technic, and quality of work. Floyd can keep me coming back with Dark Side of the Moon, but with Rush, I can enjoy almost every song starting with Caress of Steal and stopping at Moving Pictures.
Despite being a rock band, they were aggressive composers. Something that I wouldn't be willing to label any rock band, or any band I know of for that matter (during that period). No one esle matches the complexity or running time for that matter of the volume of works Rush produced.
Their talent as musicians is another incredible strong point. Geddy singing while playing the synth while playing the bass, or Alex who created new and amazing motifs that cross classical with modern rock, and Peart who's game is not only tight but could be argued to being a song composer on the drum kit IMHO.
The last thing I'll mention is the bands boldness and courage to keep breaking new ground, despite what may happen to the fan base. Personally, they lost me at Signals. I can appreciate the music, but am not attracted to it. Admirable just the same though.

Definitely not Rush. Genesis was pretty good and Led Zeppelin was probably the best hard rock band ever, but Pink Floyd was probably the most original and interesting band of the 1970s.

Definitely NOT Genesis. I'd probably pick Rush as the best group...they were the tighest, most-polished of the four. Their drummer is unbelievable, and several of their songs changed time signatures, which most bands don't know how to do. Second would probably be Pink Floyd because well....nobody sounds like Pink Floyd. Their songs are like pieces of classical music...they have a certain depth to them, musically, as do their albums. Led Zeppelin was cool, but not as polished as Floyd or Rush. Genesis...well...why did you put Genesis up there anyway?!

Music is a matter of opinion. They are all so different and great in what they do. Floyd is my favorite because of the experimentation and emotional flavor of Gillmore and Waters.

What the F is Rush doing on that list? Cleaning the toilets after the others? Why didn't you put Britney Spears then, as well?
Lesson for you kid: there's no "better" or "best" in music - you can't compare them. Grow up.

rush has some great songs, but also a lot of crappy nerdy songs. genesis.. wtf.
so we're left with pink floyd vs. led zeppelin. personally i'm saying pink floyd!!! they made 4 amazing albums (the wall, dark side, wish you were here, and animals). the division bell is really good too. i'm not a zeppelin fan, but they were pretty good and all.
