I'm not really sure, but this sounds like an oxymoron where one part of a phrase contradicts the other (like jumbo shrimp). I say this because I think it would be very difficult to appear elegant when you are in despair. However, unless the assignment was about such contradictions that won't help much. "Elegant" means marked by refined grace or dignified propriety, while "despair" means the loss of all hope and confidence. After thinking about these definitions, I guess it is not such an oxymoron after all. For me it would be almost impossible to exhibit elegant despair, but then for me, it would be pretty hard to exhibit elegance at all. In my mind I picture Jacqueline Kennedy at the funeral of her husband, President John F. Kennedy. I think she displayed elegant despair. She was obviously very sad, but she also displayed dignity while demonstrating propriety.

Is it a poetry unit? Sounds poetic to me. Elegant means refined and dignified and despair is grieving. So measured sorrow?
