DO NOT USE WIKIPEDIA!!!! For the main reason that anyone can go on and write anything they want whether it's true or false... You can't trust the information...

Being a Chemistry major... Water is by far the most amazing molecule on the face of the earth. yea it's simply an Oxygen atom with two hydrogen atoms, but that only scratches the surface. Water can exist in 3 states: Solid, Liquid, & Gas. In a physics application (my minor), in each of these states the refractive index changes as well.. i'm almost positive that the refractive index of ice is 1.309, in air the refractive index is definitely 1.00, as a liquid is 1.333. Back to chemistry... water has a molecular weight of 18.0 g/mol (rounded values). Water has extermely stong bonds called Hydrogen bonds. this is when the hydrogens on the oxygen interact with other water molecules by partial charges. Eventhough oxygen has an oxidation state of -2 and each hydrogen is +1, the molecules should have an overall charge of 0. But when there are other water molecules, they have partial charges, the hydrogens have partial +'s and oxygens have partial -'s. These bonds are represented as dotted lines... dont get confused with the straight hard lines which stand for real bonds... hydrogen bonds are moreso intermolecular forces than a type of "bond" like covalent or ionic. Water is also extremely important in acid/base reactions. In this case, a hydronium ion is formed (H3O+)...

There is a ton of information about H2O on the internet, but a very important aspect is the hydrogen bonding that i explained... Just know that Hydrogen bonding can only occur with Nitorgen, Oxygen, and Fluorine atoms.... ONLY N,O, & F.

it is made up of two molecules of hydrogen and one molecule of water.

we use it everyday,

it is needed for all living things and survival.
