I think that it's all about global marketing. Yao Ming, the best-known athlete from a country of 1.3 billion people and the top vote-getter among N.B.A. All-Stars. Yao was regarded as a phenomenon, an athletic symbol of China's rise as a world power, an unstoppable force of marketing in China and a basketball bridge to the United States.
Take care.

I thought Ming was his last name but I guess it is his first name. Yao is just a surname that he uses.

I believe that his jersey in China said Yao on it and at his request, the NBA okayed it! In other countries and other sports, people can put even nicknames on their jerseys! There is one other player with the same case, Nene.. with that accent mark on the e! His name is so long and confusing, the NBA okayed it too.
