I'm thinking 5 tool players first, then power hitters, then speed, then pitching? What do you think and what do you do?

Pitchers and shortstops seem to be the positions with the least amount of good choices, so I always put them up top. I try to get at least one pretty good one and as many decent ones as I can. I tend to avoid the top top players assuming that they will be drafted before my turn, but some lower choices may not be. I also try to research the sleepers. Like this year I was able to grab Daisuke before the hype got around.

Screw 5-tool players. Only about 2 or 3 of the 5 tools are of any importance to fantasy leagues. I'd take a top power hitter over decent 5-tooler any day. I also never consider speed except as a tiebreaker, because drafting guys for speed will only get you one category in your league (SB). The biggest point of all, I think, is to not pigeonhole yourself into any particular draft strategy. You should take the absolute best fantasy player available with each pick. And always remember that two mediocre players do not add up to a great player.

For example, don't waste a high draft pick on a decent-hitting catcher if there is another top hitter available. Sure, you might end up getting stuck with a bad catcher, but you'll almost always be better off with a great power hitter and a bad catcher than a decent catcher and a mediocre power hitter.

My strategy is batting average and speed too go along with a strikeout pitchers and a strong relief pitching crew. I like guys who hit .300, they don't go through slumps, they score runs, they produce all season Strike out pitchers tend to have low eras and whip, but do get hurt more. I like the risk of taking either Joe Mauer or Victor Martinez with a lower then expected pick, thus ensuring you will be getting first rate production from a position most people will just scrap. You need a trade ally, I like proven veteren players over prospects and rookie sensations. Always consider injury history, be very active on the waiver wire trying to get replacement relievers because relievers frequently lose their jobs. Do not not play in a 5x5 roto league, you will find them to be boring, play in a league with at least 7 or more catergories. Keep an eye on the other players during the draft, know what positions they have drafted to try to predict who they will draft next, draft the best players available and trade a lot. Do a few mock drafts before your real draft to get an idea of how to draft from each spot. Do not underestimate the importance of pitching, at the end of the season it will be the difference. Always consider the depth of each position, for example the league is filled with many great first and third basemen right now, so you can gey quality there in later rounds, but shortstop and second is harder.

I think you are shorting pitching too much. If you are in a 5x5 roto league pitching accounts for half of the categories. The way I draft is I take the best player still remaining on the board for the first 3-4 rounds. If this means I have 2 first baseman then so be it. But you have to be careful about this because if you take 5 hitters in the first 5 rounds you will suffer with a lack of pitching.

The mid rounds I fill in the rest of my starting hitters and bulk up on mid level pitching and grabbing closers. The later rounds you are working on your bench, backend of your rotation and sleepers.

In the mid rounds is where you also where you start filling in where you have weaknesses. If you are loaded with power hitters it would be smart to start grabbing high avg/speed guys maybe in the middle infield and outfield.

So I guess to sum it up you draft for quality and most importantly balance
