In most cases, in nature a male will have a broader head, stronger jaw line, and deeper set eyes. Your mom gets it right because you are programed to see these things as male. When you draw, you adapt your drawing accordingly without even really thinking about it. By the way, Humans are one of the few examples where the male is not also more decretive. Horns, colors, feathers, or whatever.

It's almost a rule of nature, that the more beautiful the creature is, the more likely its a male. The plainer it is, the more likely it's a female. Male animals are colorful to attract a female.

often times the male creature is much 'prettier' than the female. i.e. the male cardinal is the bright red one & the female is a light brown. ...i know i am a nerd.
