Fonts are sharper on LCD displays. Characters are made up by pixel dots but CRTs slightly highlight adjacent pixels. LCDs should be run at the native resolution and will generally produce blurred characters at other settings. If you can only tolerate 640 x 480 or 800 x 600 monitor pixel settings for character size, LCDs are out.

A 15 inch LCD works at 1024 x 768 pixels. The overall screen area and character sizes will be about the same as a 17 inch CRT at 1024 x 768 pixels.

A 17 inch LCD works at 1280 x 1024 pixels allowing more information to be displayed but character size is smaller than those at 15 inches.

A 19 inch LCD also uses 1280 x 1024 pixels. Then character sizes are about the same as 15 inch LCD.

Widescreen LCDs will be somewhat different.
