Glad you asked, Anthony -- especially in this category. No, it is not and does not. It is poppycock with precious little basis in science and reality.
Months ago I gave believers on this site a chance to prove me wrong and add credibility to astrology. I invited anyone to tell me my birth sign based on nothing but an honest list of character traits. In a couple weeks many responders answered confidently -- with eleven of the twelve possible signs.

I had counted on that to happen, of course, and figured a demonstration where believers' could showcase their own errors would be more effective than a lecture.
This, of course, was just one small part of the mountain of evidence against astrology. So: popular, yes, I'm sad to say. True? No.
Now, untrue doesn't mean useless. Astrology does get people conscious of the cosmos, to an extent. And it is entertainment for some people -- though I can't imagine myself being so bored as to get any fun out of something so meaningless.
If only its uses were all so benign.
It was understandable for the ancients to make up things which comforted them and helped them to feel connected to the universe in some cause-and-effect way. That's how astrology was born.
But since testing has become possible, decades of tests by generations of scientists have failed to show *any* evidence that it works. And really, how could it? Believers cannot answer that question. People hold onto it because they stubbornly refuse to do careful research. It's remarkable how much evidence (on any subject) people will ignore if they *want* to believe something. Self-delusion is no myth!
Another powerful -- and dangerous -- reason it continues is that it gives lazy or careless people an excuse for their inaction and misery. This allows them to watch their life and their world (and the rest of ours') deteriorate around them, while they absolve themselves from having to do anything to change it for the better... "it's not my fault my life and the world is crap. It's in the stars! Poor me."
It even saves them from having to think and make decisions! What a wonderful tool for the irresponsible, lazy, superficial, don't-confuse-me-with-facts types so easily found in our society.
The tooth fairy could learn something from this. If *it* had this much to offer, it would be a much more popular figure. Hell... there'd be weekly reports of people swearing to have seen it.
To answer the other part of your question, I'd say maybe two thirds of my sign's characteristics apply to me at times, and about one third even regularly. *But so do those of every other sign.*
Astrology as anything but an amusement -- particularly as a wise guide -- is not only a pathetic waste of time and money, but a *danger* in the same way that rumors, myths, urban legends, chain mails, spam, irresponsible news reporting and an uneducated public are dangers... all helping to make the world a *worse* place.
Since this is 2007, not 1007 -- or 2000 BC -- it should amaze and frighten a reasonable person that so many people put so much time and mental energy into a pseudoscience which was born out of our ancestors' understandable ignorance of their world and the strange objects in the sky.
Now that we know those objects are stars like our sun and worlds like our earth, and that they couldn't possibly exert any influence over our destiny simply because one or the other was visible at the time of our birth... I simply shake my head, sigh, and fear for the world that's filled with such primitive beliefs.
Psst, by the way.... {whispering}.... the tooth fairy is a myth, too.

Astrology is no guarantee, but rather a guideline with a lot of gray in the mix. There is yet to be anyone who can accurately predict the future, whether based on the movement of the planets or whatever. If there were, they would win the state lottery week after week or play the stock market and make millions overnight. I can predict the future for you in one respect, if you do not make the effort and study, then you are MUCH more likely to fail and if you DO fail, then the fault will lie squarely on your shoulders, not in the stars...

Astrology is not true. I mean, how can STARS determine how rich you will be or wether you will break up or have an accident or what ever? All the stuff about hooscopes is not true either. People say it is because they read the horoscope Which is just a made up generalisation, and try to relate themselves to it and try every effort to find something in the horoscope that fits them.

Astrology is fun but you really have to consider how ridiculous it is that celestial bodies millions and billions of miles away could have some sort of influence on human personalities. On the other hand, the sun, 93 million miles away, does have a profound influence on life here on Earth. Indeed, without the sun we could not exist. Therefore, you might consider the seasons. Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter. Being born in any of those times might actually influence your personality traits to some extent. Do you like snow? Maybe through an infant's eyes you saw your first snowfall and found it beautiful. Do you like the warm sun and tropical beaches? Maybe you were born in the warm summer months. Things like that.

The readings in the paper don't seem to work for me.
I think they are written with everyone in mind.
After finding out that the wise men in the bible that visited the baby Jesus used Astrology to predict the birth I would have to say that if you believe in the bible then you have to believe in Astrology. Although the bible says it is wrong to use it. In one of the books that was thrown out of the King James Bible it said that fallen angels taught daughters of men things like Astrology but God intervened and made it work only half the time.
I don't think it works like modern Horoscope Enthusiasts would have you believe.

i personally don't believe in astrology and i think that the hitchhiker series by douglas adams (it's in one of the books can't remember which) brings up a good point. astrology is based on the positioning of planets. say we discover a new planet. now what? (i believe some years back we had found a new planet beyond pluto but decided not to name it a planet and now pluto is not a planet either)

It would be fun to study the people you know and see if they fit in with the profile of their respective astrological signs.
