I had been using Ad-Aware, but I'm looking for a good firewall for free to use on my Windows XP, and the free XP firewall doesnt seem to work all that well. Any suggestions for a good and effective free firewall that is not a trojan itself?

Spybot S&D is a great free spyware detection and removal tool. Go to http://www.spybot.info/en/index.html to get a free copy.
Zone alarm is a well known and trusted firewall. You can get that from download.com.
If you are running Windows XP, the firewall that comes with it, is very effective, but it doesnt stop spyware.
Good luck!

Yeah ZoneAlarm is the best. As far as spyware, Defender that is free from MS is very good, althought Spybot will find more (that proabably not a threat to begin with).

Hands down best anti-virus protectectin is "Avast." Beats all other "paid" software. It does slow your computer down some.

Comodo is an excellent firewall. I recommend it over Norton.
AVG has highly recommended spyware and anti-virus.

Zone Alarm is the best .......... part of it is free but if you want the full version (plus antivirus) you should either find the serial number or buy it.
Norton 360 is good too but I recommend you to buy it because it take a long time to register illegally ( I didn’t try it though ;-) )

HAHA, I don't think so... all of those can help you, but in the other hand they can critically harm your computer. I totally don't recommend you downloading them. Trust me, I used to do that and my computer damaged in such a way... I had to buy a new one.
