When I logon to XP Pro I enter my password and get all the desktop icons. But if I try to, for example, access Network Connections, it takes up to 2 minutes before the dialog appears. The system appears to be waiting for something before becoming fully operational. In Windows TAsk Manager I've noticed that under Users my username does not appear, until after the 2 minutes when the system comes to life. Can anyone advise?! Many thanks. .

run your msconfig and see how many programs you have launching at startup....remove some bloat and it might fast track things.

also do a quick scan for things like spyware or trojans...they will slow you down as well

I think you are using a really strict firewall that doesn’t let any programs to operate until it opens completely.
Try this, go to start>run and type msconfig on the window that comes up (the first page) check selective startup and then UNCHECK "load startup items" . then restart your computer, see if it is faster or not. If it is still slow then you need to upgrade your CPU. If it is not slow anymore then you need to check which of the programs cause the computer to slow down (try unchecking each and log out and log in see what happens ( remember to start with large programs))However, don’t forget to recheck that option("load startup items") after you saw the results.

Your system is not fully started yet. Just need to wait a while.

To speed up things, make sure you defragment your hard disk regularly. Also, use Starter ( http://www.snapfiles.com/get/starter.html ) or What's Running ( http://www.whatsrunning.net/WhatsRunning/Download/WhatsRunning2_2_Setup.exe ) to manage your startup programs.

I use the program "Chameleon Startup Manager" for it.
It fully controls startup by selecting the programs to be launched, while customizing the startup settings (ie how often and when programs should be launched, etc).
You can find it here:

The computer uses indexing services for faster serach of its content I think that is the reason behind the slowness. If you want to disable this service then

right click on the C drive icon
than click on properties
look at the bottom
now unckeck the option "allow this disk for fast..................."
I think this would help

what antivirus do you have ? some are a blighter for hogging resources and slowing down boot times, norton being one in particular, basically as previously mentioned drop everything from your start up,if you have loads of stuff on auto boot with windows then it will make it drag on and all the time they are running when you dont need them they are just using memory that you could do with elsewhere.
