Wow, so many people are saying Goa ! I have to agree : Goa is awesome and it's one of my favourite places. But a famous expression is :"Goa is not India". The real, or rather the dominating India is outside of Goa. Goa is it's own world with a huge Christian influence (it was occupied by Portugal for a long time). Therefore it has a very unique feel to it.
So if you'd rather get a taste of "the real India" is suggest other places.
While the Taj Mahal is an amazing sight, I personally don't like the city it's in (Agraa).
Mumbai is a big stressfull, dirty city where all the people I know that have been there try to get out off as quickly as possible. As in other big cities around the globe (a lot of) people are rude, try to rip you off, are very stressed. And of course it's more of a western feel than anywhere else (there's even a Mc Donalds).
I visited Elefanta Island, Ghandi's House, the beach, Gateway to India and a few other things there, but after the first day I had enough of this city.
My favourite cities are Pushkar and Udaipur (both in Rajasthan and can be combined on a visit). Pushkar is a very holy and spiritual place. Udaipur is beautiful. Check out the James Bond 007 movie "Octopussy". The scenes in India were filmed in Udaipur.
Hampi (south of Goa) is another nice place, but it's tiny and not suitable for a very long stay.

India is amazing! So much to do and so much to see. It all depends on how much time you have and what part of India you are visiting. If you are in the North check out places like New Delhi and Agra-Taj Mahal (which is a must see) and if you are down south go to Goa is beautiful! ETC. There are so many wonderful places to see from the temples to the Himalayas and places like Mumbai which is like NYC and Rajasthan!

Check out the site below it will give you a better idea about places to visit, things to see, do..depending on the time of travel.

It depends upon ur own taste, if u are looking for historic monuments, then first thing is Taj Mahal, Agra(UP), if u like pollution free place then it is Chandigarh which is also famous for its landscape, rock garden, rose garden. U will feel happy to see its roads lined up with beautiful tree, even if u are walking alone.
Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkatta, and other Metros are famous for their own things. So u have to decide whether u want to see temples, historic monuments, scenic beauty i.e. hilly area in Himachal Pradesh, Gardens, Jammu & Kashmir. It is better if u read a book and take ur decision or contact tourist information centre in Delhi or wherever u are at the moment. India is most beautiful Country as it is a country where people are warm, loving and fiendly and respect a visitor also.

India is full of lots of places which can easily be termed as best. It is again a "perception" of people.

Still, I am born and brought up in Mumbai, travelled to various places, trekked, climbed, biked et al in various places for so many years. I will state what I feel is best ( obviously);

Himalayas : I have got a definite bias to all things Himalayan. But the best place (in all terms) is CHAMBA in Himachal Pradesh. Close second is Zanskar valley and third is the travel between Jammu to Srinagar ( particularly after Ramban ).

Coastal : Several spots alongside seashore in Maharashtra. Best is Harihareshwar, Sasawane, Guhagar, Malwan et al

Forts: Raigad in Maharashtra no doubt

Cities : Mumbai followed by Mangalore followed by Srinagar.

Am still visiting places and keep evaluating the places so the list might actually change over a period of time.

But then please let me know about your preferences, too.

The best place in India to visit is Taj Mahal Agra. It is one of the world's Seventh Places just like Chines Wall.. This is a very beautiful monument built by Shahjahan, King of India in memory of his beloved wife named Mumtaz. It is made of white Marbel which shines and looks very beautiful and lovely in moonlight. Do visit this place.

All of India really is a beautiful country. It's a colorful kaleidoscope and a mosaic. If you have a cast iron belly and a tendency not to fall sick at every given opportunity, it is 'The Place' for tourists, locals and foreigners alike. A Wal Mart of choices at Wal Mart prices. And the Himalayas are by far the best.

there is no way i can answer that question... it is not fair to choose one place over the other....

however, if you had only one place that you can visit in Inida... I'd recomend Bombay... That place will give you a sneak peek into the multicultural, multilingual nation... You can see modern Inida jostling around with the ancient India, all in one place...
