I brought a peugoet 406 1999 V6 and had it tested before I brought it. They found it had a noisy pump. The dealer "fixed" it. I've had a full service since (1 week after purchasing) and the high pressure hose needs replacing as it is leaking. 200 pounds just for the hose!!!

The pump wasn't replaced. he topped it up only.

Good for you on having it checked first! I take it the dealer who fixed it was the one who sold it to you. Then he should fix the hose too, 'cos it was defective when you bought the car. It's not unusual for elderly hoses to give up under the strain of a new pump, if that's what he did.

If you do wind up having to pay for it, I'd be inclined to ring around a few Peugeot dealers first to get prices. I don't think high-pressure hose costs THAT much!

Oh, and to actually answer your question, yes a low fluid level can make a PS pump noisy.

If the hose needed replacing it was probably leaking resulting in the drop of fluids. The easy way to check if the level is low is to turn the steering on to full lock and listen for an abnormal noise from the pump.

often when a new pump is installed......the rest of the system is not use to the higher pressure......and leak,s begin to present themselve,s.................but the possibility that the tech. manhandled the hoses is very real......resulting in a leak......take it back & tell them you think the leak came from abusive treatment to the pressure hose........although it may have started to leak reguardless of misstreatment.......but as for your first question........yes......low fluid can cause a noisy pump!

When the pump starts sucking air, a buzzing sound happens and becomes especially loud when turning.
