Defeated the spanish navy quickly, liberated Puerto Rico, and later the Phillipines as well. A new form of imperialist expansion for us, and established an oupost in the eastern hemisphere, all while showing the world we were a formidable world power by doing it in a matter of months.

Actually the Spanish navy was outdated and no match for the newer American ships. Much of the Spanish Empire was taken over by the U.S. including the Phillipines, Puerto Rico, Guam. A new empire had been created on a world wide basis. A rather tacky thing to do but it brought new respect to the U.S. by large powers in Europe.
