Its depends on how playful and protective, Rotties are pretty good, but it also depends if you have any kids, and German Shepards have a good history.

A German shepherd or a German shepherd mix. I got a German shepherd mix (mostly Germ. shep.) from the dog pound about 10 years ago. She is the best, smartest, most playful, most protective, and - did I say best, yet? - dog I have EVER had! I absolutely LOVE her! She's my right arm and companion. She has learned certain things just on her own. When I say "wait," she knows to wait. I didn't "teach" her that... she just figured it out. She puts her head on my knee when I'm sad... she prances around like a puppy when she wants to play catch... she treats my other pets sweetly, but is ferocious and protective of me when strangers are near.

I couldn't have asked for a better dog. I am very, very blessed with my Sam.

I have a black lab and pit bull mix. Best, smartest dog, cleanest dog I ever had. Good for protection, not aggression. Not too big or small, companion dog, hardly sheds at all and can roll around in the mud, shake off, and not be dirty at all.
Whatever you get, look for a mix breed. They are always better dogs.

I have a preference for Akita's .Very Smart, Very strong, They are loyal to thier families, But they can be a bit obstinate. It can be a battle of wits with them sometimes. But they will make you laugh, too. Very good Dogs if you stay on top of things with them.

Rottweller is strong but i think it is not that playful. I guess Dalmation is a good choice because my niece had one and it really look strong and playful at the same time.

I have several friends that swear by German shepards. They are smart, loyal, friendly, and of course good watch dogs.

I recommend the Shiba-Inu. They're handsome, smart, and loyal. Plus they have cool-looking ears.
