I've heard the "it takes 1/2 the amount of time that the relationship lasted" bit, and I don't buy it!
My first love broke my naive little 17 y.o. heart. It took me a long time (almost 2 years) to move on and to quit wishing he would call, or that we would run into each other and so on. Now, years later, I still have thoughts of him, good and bad! When you know someone so well, its like you always have a piece of them with you, no matter if you are together or not.
Your first love is something much more than a heartbreak to get over in 6 months. A paring that made two people closer, is something to learn and grow from. You're finding emotions you never knew you had and maybe seeing new ones in other people as well and learning lessons that will stick with you for the rest of your life.
This process (wanting, having, losing) is difficult, but necessary to having healthy relationships. You are conditioning your heart to deal with the problems and complications you will encounter in all relationships, whether friend or lover.
Good luck with whomever you choose, just remember to love yourself first and all those worthy enough will follow.

Hold on a minute, let me put on my reading glasses and put down my knitting...
Oh wow. I got over him when I realized that there are men out there that are even better. He influenced my life a great deal because I was very young and he was a little older. In that regard he's often in my thoughts.
Since the first love isn't usually the one that lasts or the one you marry, you learn to move on fairly quickly.

It took me about 2 years, it was hard. Only time can mend the broken heart. Stay strong, and if it's meant to be, it will be! Someday you might get back with him. Give it time. If it's not meant to be, you will eventually find the right one.
Good luck

One year. Just go with the flow. If you start to fall for this new guy, let it happen.

A few weeks. I think it was because I met someone better soon after, and nearly all feelings towards him diminished!
