That was figured out somewhere around the time of Lavoisier as the other person said, and he's probably correct since he gave a reference.

Later on the conservation law was also applied to energy, and later still Einstein discovered that matter and energy were interchangeable under certain conditions, so the law is now stated as the conservation of mass-energy.

This "law" is not true. Matter can be created and destroyed, and often is.
