The wii doesn't play DVD's or CD's. And the reasoning behind this is most homes already have at least 1 dvd player, so why include a feature that would raise the price and that not everybody needs.
However, there have been rumors about a Wii 2 or Wii 2.0 that will include dvd playback functionality. This newer version, should it acutally materialize, has already been designated a Japan only release, at least for now.

Yes for now the wii will only play nintendo disks. There are rumors of a hardware update that will allow wii owners to have dvd playback. But that means you have to buy another wii. Nintendo did this to keep costs down on the console.us Its funny that i ran across this question. Im using the trial internet channel to answer this question lol
