I have this rickety old dresser that I am restoring. Years of cracked veneer needs to be removed. I bought a paint scraper and that did get some. I have sanded to the point of exhaustion....and still, i can feel the veneer is still there. Is there a product that I can maybe paint on that will help the rest peel up? Or another type of scraping tool that I should try?

depends on the age of the veneer , if it is hide glue or wood glue,
hide glue with a small amount of heat will weaken considerably . With an iron on low to medium with wax paper two sheets under it slowly work on the surface that has the veneer , (if it is a flat surface, ) then take a thin palate knife and slide it under to lift the veneer. go at this little by little ( 4 -8 inches at a time) I think you will appreciate the results. get the palate knife from an art supply house.

At Home Depot they have a product that just kind of dissolves the finish. Formsby is one brand. You just wipe the mess off with paper towel or maybe old newspaper. Dispose of them carefully because they are flammable. Then you just put a nice oil on it to finish it up instead of any other finish. Lemon oil tends to bleach out the wood, which of course you may like, but there are other kinds of oil, which I don't remember the name of. Polish it up nicely after the oil sets a while. Formbsy makes a
nice kit with everything you need to restore. You might want to put a new stain on it before the wax. I like the kind that is a gel so it doesn't run all over the place.

I dont know if this idea is good bad or ugly but it might work...
You know those hand held steamers for cleaning? I have veneer on my kitchen cupboards very ugly. I was thinking about using it because I did use it on my shower tub around and it lifted the wall surround. You have to be quick and it may take two people - one to steam and one to pull veneer...I was going to use the floor attachment because it would cover a wider area...

They have a product sold at hard ware stores or home depot called liquid sand paper. You wipe it on and this will help the paint stick better to what ever you are painting. No further need to sand or scrap unless you want.
