Should breathe, that is the air exchange should be effective. This enhances the drying of sweat, n prevents diseases like fungal infections which r facilitated due to moisture(sweat).
Hence my advise will be to avoid synthetic materials n preferably go for cotton.
If you want for winters, obviously chuck out cotton n go for woolen or thick cotton.

1) Thickness - because thin socks wear out quickly.
2) Cotton - absorbent.
3) Cost

first things first
- should be cotton (theyr comfy)
- cost should be reasonable (but keep in mind that money is not a factor when it comes too keeping ur feet healthy)
- the thickness should b accordin to the weather condition .thin for a hot wether , thick for cold and thin again for normal weather
-as long as tey are clean odour is nothin too wory abt .

I think you shd think abt the material as you will be wearing for a long time. Always go for cotton as it absorbs the sweat . Let the elastic be not too tight nor it will leave blood clot on your leg.
