A friend of mine is in quite the dilemma. She has just started dating this guy, whom she has been friends with for quite some time. The guy she is seeing has a child with another woman. The guy was just notified within the last week that his ex is pregnant and it is his for sure, when asked how she knew it was his for sure she replied to him telling him that she had an amnio done and they tested the unborn baby's DNA against the son's (which is the biological child of the man ) and it came back that they shared the same DNA and therefore supporting that the unborn child is indeed the man's child. Now my question to you because I am not sure how paternity especially this kind of testing is done. Is this at all possible?

YES, THAT PROCEDURE CAN BE DONE. WHETHER OR NOT SHE IS TELLING THE TRUTH IF SHE HAD IT DONE OR NOT IS ANOTHER STORY.

Yes the test can be done but they have to have a sample from the father as well, been there done that. Also think about it if they took dna from somebody else of a relative and it came out positive she could say it was theirs too. DNA doesn't lie and it has to come from both child mother and father. Hope that helps

I believe there is DNA found in amniotic fluid. However this is unconventional and will be much more expenive then waiting until the child is born. As far as comparing this to another child?..... I know the conventional way of paernity testing is to take samples from the child, as well as both parents. I dont think a siblings DNA would be sufficient.

I recently saw a program on television that mentioned this very thing. From what I know it is possible now to determine paternity by testing another child who would also be a carrier of both the parents DNA. So... yes. It is out there not... but not that widely available from my understanding.

Yeah its possible if they have the fathers DNA, im not really sure about comparing it to siblings though. Its called prenatal dna testing and can be done as early as 10weeks. Its pretty expensive. Check out this site.

Maybe ask the other mother if she agreed to have her childs dna submitted to this test.

They need to do a DNA test when the baby is born. The brother will have similar DNA because they are half-brothers if she got pregnant by someone else. My step-son and my son are the same blood type because they both have my husband's blood type.

Amnio carries a risk of miscarriage; it's extremely unlikely that it would be done just to establish paternity.

I'd say your friend's boyfriend's ex is full of it.

This page:

says you can try to establish paternity by testing a sibling, but it's not as reliable as testing the father.

To the best of my knowledge, that isn't true. DNA can only be established after birth
I would have him ask to see the paperwork stating that.
Also, I was told by my doctor that you can't have an amnio until after week 15 if the results of the AFP fall in a certain risk group
How far along is she saying she is?

shes full of it.
NO DOCTOR WILL EXTRACT DNA FROM A FETUS JUST TO ESTABLISH PATERNITY.

there is far too high a risk for msicarriage, they risk being sued for malpractice if anything comes out wrong with her baby.

they may do it if she has a high risk of a severe genetic disorder. if she is at risk for a disorder, they would have done the same with the first child. and he should know that info so u can ask him. if he is the father, why dont he just ask to see the paperwork, or go to the doc and have his dna taken and compared straightforward?

Even though they may be blood relatives does not really mean the kid is his cause it could belong to someone he is kin to or like his brother. He should still get a DNA test when she has the child.
