I guess you mean a U.S. cent for they did not mint any 1850 pennies in Britain with that date. The 1850 Braided Hair large cent mintage 4,426,844, has a value of $14.00 in grade good to $840.00 in mint state 65 red/brown. I doubt there are very many, that grade that high. I see eBay has struck again. A lot of times, more often than not people selling and buying on eBay have wishful thinking when it comes to grading coins, or find they were taken. The values listed her are about what a dealer would pay.

I assume that you are referring to the US Coronet 1 cent 1850. Well, unless your cent is slabbed MS-64 and above(meaning that it's graded by a coin grading service and inserted into a hard plastic holder) or in near flawless or having some kinda error, then I don't think you can get a grand for it, to be honest. I'm not sure where did you see a similar one selling for a grand, but most dealers who buy coins won't pay what is more than the book. In fact, they pay much less than book, and the books says that an 1850 cent is about $20 to $200 the most for circulated conditions, and $800 for choice uncirculated(MS-63). Selling it to another collector or through Yahoo Auctions is a better option, if you do not like eBay. Good luck.
