Without knowing the people involved, it's hard to say. However, my best guess would be for the followng reasons, and not in any particular order:
1) Seriously neglected at home
2) Boredom.."Spicy" sounds better than a "nothing existence"
3) Sex ain't what it used to be
4) For the attention (this goes with #1)
5) Unappreciated
6) Doesn't thrive well on drama and/or fighting
7) Wants to be heard (that's right...it's not always about the sex!)
8) Wants to hurt spouse/retribution for affairs he/should has had
9) Money talks
10) currently living in a loveless marriage, looking for love
and/or acceptance somewhere

People like variety. Some men, and women too, will have affairs with someone they wouldn't want to marry, or even be with for very long, but like to just have someone different once in a while. Actually, monogamy is the exception rather than the rule, in most cultures, no matter how much they may pretend otherwise.
Many husbands and wives have been able to put their marriages back together after one of them had an affair. It doesn't have to be the end of the world.

I would say that when people have affairs they feel like there is something missing. Ya sex is usually involved here most of the time. People are most likely to have affairs when they are not feeling happy in their marriage. They are so caught up in a depressed marriage that they decide to seek some kind of comfort in another person. When they finally realize what they had done the marriage is even worse than before but these things can be prevented people just let their feelings get in the way

Well I hope you are not going through one. They are messy and some body's trust is always lost. I believe that the idea of having an affair is something that the person has contemplated for a long time. I don't think its something that was suddenly thrust upon them. And when the opportunity strikes, many will take the excitement of the affair. I think the motivation is clearly gratification, having control of a situation in his or her life, the chance to act out something exciting and dangerous.

some people who are prone to having affairs
are simply selfish, uncaring of the effects it
causes, and there's 'always' an underlying
fear behind this behavior.
I personally knew a guy who has been married five times now, and with each wife he commited adultry.
NOW, there's no way you can convince me
he simply married the wrong women, or that they 'all' drove him to do it..
NO, some men are just that selfish and UN-
commited to any one woman..
The biggest motivation to have affairs is,
there's a lack of some kind in the relationship.
And considering the above mentioned man,
his lack was lack of commitment and a lack
of decency and honesty.
But in general, affairs happen because one
partner isn't satified with the other, and this could be in many categories.

There are many reasons why people have affairs, in a relationship when one patner does not respect the other and makes the other patner feel like their hopeless and good for nothing, then you start to look outside to know if your really worthless, some people just have affairs cause their bored, some want a new taste , its all about what we want in the end.

Some spouses does not know how to treat the other and if you don't show your spouse the attention they need and love them like you should, but most of all make them feel good about them selves, well when someone comes around and makes the spouse feel good about them selves , they tend to become attracted and before they realize it they are having an affair.

well, i think mainly for men is the fact that they feel that they are sneaking around and no one knows ( meaning the poor wife). which is not true. all women know when their husbands cheat, they can so feel it and sense it. but in some cases they let it go because they want to keep their husbands.
for woman i think mainly competition and risk taking.
in general i think both sides just enjoy the "seceret" portion of the game. if u notice marriages that result in such affairs end up divorced... because the seceret is now out...

I'm not proud of this, but I was once with someone on the side. I did not cheat, I was the person he cheated with. I once asked him why we were together, and why we did what we did (I have always known that he was taken), and neither of us could come up with a good reason why we were together. So we ended it. I think for most men it's the risk and danger that they get the excitment from, plus twice the sex...

Getting that little attention that your not getting at home I suppose.
Then that leads to other things. I think that men just can’t have one partner in life and usually stray off at least once in their life. Well that’s my experience anyway.
My husband has not strayed yet but im sure he will one day. After all he is a male!
