To begin with , I am a smoker ! I live here in Ireland , and there has been a smoking ban here for the last few years. I was a smoker before the ban and still am currently !
I totally agree with you in relation to your opinion of drink driving , drink related fights etc , and you are right ! It is still a huge problem. However ,when the smoking ban was first introduced in Ireland, people panicked with the thoughts of not been able to have a cigarette while having a quiet pint , or in a nightclub . The ban came in then , and that was that, Now to be quite honest , I am quiet happy with the situation here. I actually prefer places being smoke free ! It is better for everyone. Publicans here also aided the situation greatly by setting up outdoor areas for smokers ( for which you will see yourself too in time become the best area of a pub ) .Workplaces has cleaned up a lot, and popping out for a smoke gives you an excuse to leave.
I would like to give you a few more links, but if you can , try looking up a bit more about the Irish smoking ban. It will help.

Not quite see why the government brought the legislation in! If it has the "desired" effect then they are on a loser. Simple maths:- Tax income from tobacco about 11 billion. Cost of smoking related illnesses to health service about 3 billion. Deficit is 8 billion.!!! Where will that come from? A far better solution would have been to have Smoking clubs and Pubs and Non smoking pubs and clubs. In the "smokies" all employees would have to be smokers. A very simple solution which the government is too busy getting us into illegal wars to have worked out.
The Only downside to my suggestion, as far as I can see from recent personal experience, is that the Non smoking establishments would soon be going out of business!! Oh and I am not a smoker!!

I'm a non smoker but I'm not 100% happy with the ban, but to some extent it is the result of how smokers behave. However considerate you are as a smoker, you have to agree that many smokers are not. My child's face was burned by a careless woman walking past with a cigarette in her hand. I'm asthmatic so there are many places I can't go because I know the smoke will be too bad for me.
By the way drunk driving has been illegal for decades; assault has been illegal for centuries.

What does your idea of drinking have to do with a smoking ban. I don't think anyone approves of drunk driving and it isn't socially accepted. Only idiots drink and drive. And, only idiots smoke. Sorry but you're killing yourself-which is your choice but when you smoke you harm others around you. And even if you don't smoke around others, you still smell like smoke. You should be mad as h*ll that cigarette companies have hooked you on their drug. And when they wanted more profits, they added more nicotin to make it harder to quit. Cigarette companies are murderers just like the drunk drivers you rave about. Next time you reach for that $3 or $4, get mad and put it back in your pocket. If you stop soon enough, the damage to your body can be reversed. IT TAKES TEN OR FIFTEEN YEARS TO DO IT. Yes, I'm a reformed smoker. . .quit years and years ago. . .and I still want a cigarette. . .and I'm mad as h*ll.

How true you are. I think the point is that people have to hate someone or something though and as probably 90 per cent of people drink it is a bit hard to hate yourself. People need to learn that there isn't a black or white in life and doing things like smoking isn't really making the world a terrible place. When the ban comes into effect the world won't change that much and people will find another thing that they want to ban (such as McDonald's). Eventually we will all be restricted to the point of annoyance and it will turn in to the movie Demolition Man where you can only do things which are good for you. I don't understand why everyone wants to prolong our lives so much. If I can't have fun I don't want to live to the age of 100.

i think its because smoking is an easier problem to deal with (and think of blair's legacy if it becomes as successful as it has in other parts of the world!) obviously alcohol also causes big social problems, but the majority of drinkers do not adversely affect anyone else. however, all smokers adversely affect people around them. i am a big believer in doing what you want, but only if it doesnt affect anyone else, and smoking all over me in a pub is not nice. i am a barmaid, and after a long shift i feel like ive been smoking, my lungs feel full of tar and my chest hurts when i run. alcohol abuse is a problem which needs dealing with, but one thing at a time, and eradicating smoking in public places is a great way to start.

I agree, but it will happen because although we moan about it ,will any of us do anything about it. Why can't we start a movement whereby everyone just ignores the ban? Sadly I know what would happen, we smokers would all be set upon by non-smokers,they would attack us,but they would not go to prison for it, we would, because we had broken the LAW!!!!

i can see some point to your question.
but is it OK so smoke in a restaurant when others are trying eat there expensive meal?
is it OK to smoke around others pass on your smoke when they don't smoke?
is it ok to smoke in a confined bus or train when there may be others who don't smoke?
i did smoke about a year back but have quit because i did not want to die!
i think your why of thinking is very one sided
& im not talking about the drunks that is your excuse for your lake of consideration to non smokers!
