My daughter use to do that, and it was wind!!!! I would put him over your arm and rock him gently to help with the wind.
The position id his head in your hand and then his body laid down your arm and his arms and legs just hanging. He will love this position as it is putting pressure on his tummy and it will make him feel better.

Babies are naturally noisy sleepers, so don't go running at every single whimper in the night. My son did that also when he was first born, still does occasionally. They could be dreaming or might have a little gas. I remember this one time my son was full out crying in the middle of the night and by the time I got to his crib (maybe a minute went by) he was sound asleep again. Babies are very interesting!

Smiling because he's comfortable and probably has the feeling that he had inutero....then the next moment the baby is startled by his own reflex, noise, etc. It takes a baby the first three months of life to get used to their surroundings as they never new hot, cold, their own reflex outside of amniotic fluid, etc.

babies that young tend to "smile" when they have gas. thats prolly why he is smiling, but the gas could be upsetting his stomach, and this is what is causing him to cry. try proping him up a little bit while he is sleeping. not a whole lot, but enough to elevate his head just a bit. i found it helped with my daughter when she was newborn.

Babies that smile, oh, we think it's so cute but all the doctors say it's just that their passing gas-- gross but true-- but think that he's dreaming about you and that's why he's smiling---
crying- only 3 reasons- hungry, wet or tired....take care of the 3 and they should be happy and content.

My oldest son did that, and he "spoke' in his sleep, too, at 3 weeks.
Aren't they so precious?
I think that babies dream as much as older people do.
Maybe they are remembering where they came from...
Good luck.
