I'm mixed Puerto Rican & Italian-Irish & was raised on my mother (the Italian-Irish side) of my family. My grandfather on her side is old fashioned & doesn't accept interracial relationships, specifically black/white relationships but doesn't seem to realize that I'm mixed (he refers to me as being "white" like the rest of my mom's family does because I'm light skinned, something that isn't new to me from dealing with ignorant people in general from all races/colors). He says "blacks and whites don't mix" and that really upsets me, since I don't mind what skin color someone is. He's from an Italian-Irish background, and he doesn't understand why I have no interest in Italians and always tries to shove Italian down my throat even though i'm more hispanic-identified and prefer non-whites. He believes he is right and knows everything, but doesn't even regard that my father's father was actually very dark skinned and that i have it in my blood. How can I convince him otherwise? Any advice?

I'm sorry but if your grandfather dose not see what love is then I think you should follow your heart no matter what gets in the way . yes family is everything but so is finding your soul-mate . then you need to follow that and find out . and if your ~or any ones ~ family can not see the love there then its time to move on and let the family be for a while , you have to live for your self and no one else can run your life for you . you need to work on your life and not worry about what your family may think or say about what you doing with your life as long as you are happy with the way things are turning out for you . in the end family will come around and be there for you if the family is strong enough to go through hells gates and stay together, if not then its only up to the ones that have or evening going through it together . there are times that we walk alone in this world and then we are never alone , even when we think we are , so what do I think about your grandfather well he is set in his ways and there is no changing that , but maybe in time things will work its self out for you ... best of luck to you and yours .

No doubt he is thinking of mixing cultures. And even if your not racist, combining cultures is difficult. It takes a lot of work! Possibly he is meaning that, and not actually 'racist'.
