Well, that's a good start.
"Dear sir (or mam,)
I have just finished reading The Greatest Book after it was recommended by my teacher and I was so captivated by it that my mother made me put it down and go to sleep (but I finished it by flashlight under the covers.) I look forward to getting a copy of The Greatest Book, Jr., expecting it to be as good. Thank you for writing these books."

Tell him/her exactly how their book made you feel. I've written several letters to many authors whose work impressed me and every single one responded. I have a postcard from Anne Tyler and emails from various other authors. Just be yourself but be polite.
