Sometimes. For general education, almost always - there will be several sections of each course, so you will be able to choose the instructor and time for your classes. Some upper level classes may only be taught by one instructor, so in that case, no. It really depends on the size of the school, the number of instructors for each course (more would be able to teach introductory courses), and the level of specialization of the class.

Hi Curious,
I'm not sure how it is at MIT, but at my school, you are able to see which professor is teaching which course. If more than one course options (of the same course) are available, then the differences could just be the time of the course and also the professor. So technically, you can choose a professor for a specific course, but only if the professor is teaching that quarter/semester. Hope this helps!

It's not a silly question, I wondered the same thing my freshman year.
I'm not sure how it works at M.I.T. but I'd say you'd be able to choose your own professor. My school gives you the option of choosing a course by instructor, and I'm guessing M.I.T. is no different when it comes to that. Sometimes professors take a term off, so it's possible not to get him for one term, and he'd be there the next. Some professors also have crazy hours, but if he's that good you won't mind. (I'm sure that won't happen to you though)

Some courses allow you to select your professors/lecturers. If this is possible in your college, then it will list the lecturer's name in the course listing.
Some courses, however, are simply assigned to Staff, and a lecturer will be assigned after the semester has been finalized. As mentioned in another response, those courses are usually froeshman level courses, like early Calc. courses, Language and English courses, and other similar courses. Also, for labs and discussion groups, you will also be assigned to various TAs, usually dependent on the times of the lab/disc.

The college that I am enrolled in shows the course number, times, days and the instructor's name. So yes, as long as that instructor fits your schedule you should be able to choose when you register.
