Has anyone out there downloaded the AVG free anti virus protection. I have had McAfee up until now,but it is showing that I need to renew and that my virus protection is low. Is it safe to download this AVG as I can't really afford £4O or more for another McAfee package.
Also do I have to remove the McAfee from my computer to download the AVG? Help please, I'm a bit of a novice on this subject.Thanks.

AVG is a very good program I have used it for years and have not been infected by any viruses. I install this program on every computer I help friends and family with. You should remove any other anti-virus programs because they can see each other as viruses.

First download AVG from free.grisoft.com

AVG Free is great at protecting your computer from viruses & it's free for life.
AVG do produce a pay for service which you will need if you use anti virus software on a company computer.

Installing is easy. Just follow the on screen instructions and select "internet" whn asked where to get the update files from.

To remove your old software go to
Control Panel
Add / Remove Programs
look for you old antivirus software in the list and click "remove"

It will probably give you the option of "Repairing" or "Removing"
CLick on Remove.

Now install AVG BEFORE you go back onto the internet!

Another FREEBE software you might like is Ad-Aware.

Search for it on your internet search engine.

AVG is a great anti virus... First, download the AVG program.

(for safe installation)
Unplug Internet access to your computer. Turn on Windows Firewall. Uninstall McAfee (All of it) do the forced restart. Then Install AVG.
(Firewall is not provided)
Use ZoneAlarm, for firewalls (alerts are annoying though)
Or use Windows Firewall ( I think its best)

I'm a novice too, but I've used it before and I loved it. It was easy to understand and use. And yes, you should have to uninstall McAffee, or just turn it off. I believe I had to uninstall mine. Just download the AVG and it should tell you.

AVG free version is very good. You should also get Spy bot search and destroy 1.4 Free and Ad aware also free. Make sure you go onto the correct site as there are several out there that aren't free. Go to www.download.com/spybot search & destroy.

you have 2 or 3 options with AVG

1...the free home package
2...the home package that is "professional"...pay for 2 years
3...the home package that is "professional"...pay for 1 year

we had the "free" option, but upgraded to the professional and paid for 2 years...like it better then any virus program out there and yes, you really should take McAfee off
