It was the only country with plenty of space and hard work for them to do.

Also there was little chance of an uprising at least for a few years.

This is really a ridiculous debate by today's standards as most of them were sent here for seven years for such petty crimes.

What is the British going to do about their overcrowded prisons now? They are already using shipping for accommodation but have nowhere to send them.

Put simply we needed to populate Australia quickly with our own people. The cheapest way of doing so was to offer a convict the option of either being hanged or being transported.

Not only were convicts transported to Australia, they were also transported to the American Colonies, that is, until c1776.

The result of all of this transportation of convicts is that English as a language is widespread in the world and the Anglo Saxon race is dominant in that world. We're all over the place and have our fingers in all the pies.

Australia was not nice then it was sunny desolate and not having modern day hygiene and rugs hot climates usually meant disease and possibly death for westerners and the criminals were used for very hard labour. It also meant they would never see their families again
