You have to enable the infared capability of your Treo. I know your Treo has the Palm OS, so the path will be a little diffferent than my Treo 700w which is a Windows Mobile OS device, sorry. I'll give you the filepath I use, and it should be fairly similar.
Start> Settings> Connections> Beam. Check the "Recieve all incoming beams" box, or whatever is similar.

You didn't mention if you have a Mac or Windows computer to which you want to link with your Treo. I can't help you much on a Mac. Contact Apple for more help if you have a Mac, or go to the Genius Bar at any Apple store for free help.
On my IBM (Win XP-pro OS) laptop, I enabled the infared capability in the Control Panel under Wireless Link.

When I bring my Treo's infared port within a few inches of the laptop's infared port, a built-in program called "Wireless Link" kicks in and directs me to copy files into it to beam to my Treo. Within a few seconds of bringing the two ports together, an audio or visual cue on both devices signals they're ready to beam.

I use infared to beam everything now, including ringtones I've created on my laptop, pictures I've taken with the Treo's camera, and rather large e-books I want to read (in .doc or .txt format). I can transfer email I've gotten on my Treo into Outlook in my laptop. I even use infared to connect the two in ActiveSync instead of using the usb cable. So much simpler. I honestly can't locate my sync cable anymore.
