I live in the north and I don't think you would adjust well. The change in climate would be the worst. I don't think there would be a problem with the lack of communication. I live in Minnesota and visit South Carolina every year. Now, this Northern Belle wants to move South!

I don't think speech pattern would be a problem.... most find the Southern accent charming. The climate change would likely be the biggest adjustment !

I'm a Southern Belle in love with a man from another part of the country. I wouldn't be worried about adjusting. I would be happy just being with him wherever we are.

Ohhh, the speech patterns ain't half of it, girl. I went the other way: came from the north to Texas. Culture shock of the worst kind. And it took YEARS for me to understand what folks are saying. Everyone up north talks way fast, and the things people consider of value are totally different. If you're going, I wish you the best of luck. If I'd looked before I leaped, 20 years ago, I wouldn't have leapt. It's just too hard. I don't want to go back now, I'm green-carded, and I married a native (Arkansas), but it was just too hard.

I think it depends on where in the north because NY would probably be a bigger adjustment than Alaska due to the amount of people in the area.

depends where you move. i am in wisconsin, but i grew up around people from illinois so i talk entirely differant from people around here. it drives me nuts when i hear people say "melk" instead of milk, or "bayg" instead of bag. overall i dont think you should have too much of an issue. the accent is actually pretty cool. when i was in college, there was this guy who was from the south, and he was so charming, i could have spent hours listening to him talk. there are a few things you'd proly have to get used to besides understanding people, but it will all come eventually.

Don't worry about it. We have Rednecks up here, too and they love Southerners.
