I recommend JAVA. Today programming languages try to cover following aspects
1. Ease of use.
2. Platform independence (Create a solution once and use it at any machine, whether PC , mobile or different electronic items).
3. Object Oriented Language (Language that can be modeled as a real-world language).
4. Well documented and price effective
Java is best on all the above 4 pillars used to define a good language.

Nowadays the IT field is going with OOPS and basic methods of C. So for the beginners C is the best language. Because most of the programming languages are following the programming styles of C.
After that learn C++ for object oriented programming. And step by step achieve Java, PHP , .NET and so on.

Java. It incorporates many different aspects of object oriented programming while keeping a relatively simple structure about it. It uses a lot of logic and is well documented (java docs) for usage inquires. It was my first language and I think it was the best place to start.

Java is nice and easy, and it is a start for object oriented programming..
i would recommend Pascal too cos it is very easy (but i think it is to be considered old, unless you wanna use Delphi environment)
