My duaghter use to love art but now with this new art teacher she hates going. The art teacher is so critical of everything, For example there can be no pencil marks on the page and everything must be symetrical. I feel for a child who is 7 this is alittle much, what do you think

I too have a 7-year old daughter. If the art teacher is crippling your daughter's creativity and love of art you ought to talk to the teacher. Maybe she came from teaching at a higher level and doesn't understand the implications of her actions. Yes, art should be fun and it should inspire children.... not make them afraid to express themselves in fear of criticism.

How are you measuring HARD? I want to do it against I don't like doing it because there is discipline involved!

You have called into question the capability of the instructor. You imply that the instructor does not know how to teach or is not qualified to select the material for the grade level that she is teaching!

The real issue here seems to be discipline!

When I started showing my two children how to print, after a week or so, I began tearing there sloppy papers up and making them do it over again, I sat with them and explained the importance of doing neat work.
7 years is already late! Do you give your child music lessons? They would not accept sloppy playing either.

There is the correct way, and there are standards.
That needs to be taught from the beginning, early on.

I think you should be a parent, either support the instructor or go else where!

Have you sat in the class room?

I think the teacher is too strict. Art is individual and subjective. I can understand the art teacher trying to instill a sense of responsibility and good work habits, but pencil marks and everything symmetrical? Is the teacher new to teaching or new to elementary school? It may just be inexperience with young children. It may be beneficial to talk with the teacher and explain how your daughter is feeling. I know that is hard to do, but the teacher may not know how he/she is perceived.

i would have a talk with principle and her class room teacher to see if any of the other kids were complaining also and then i would go have a conference with her infront of the school board i would ask other parents to ask there childeren if they found art to be difficult too if so something is wrong and needs to be addressed to the board of education most of the schools now have cameras in them and they will be able to watch this teacher and see what is going on in her class yes art is suppose to be fun its just like gym class,or music,or libary its suppose to bring out the childs creatitivay not bring the child down good luck

I agree art should be fun and children should explore their own style.
I love painting and drawing and I am teaching someone who is 36 to paint. I sometimes give her an idea but let her do it herself.
Paul Klee and other artist paint cubes and there are many other styles.

Art is your expression, your view on life, a window to how you see the world.
the worst thing an art teacher can do is make everyone art like theirs.

Yes, that is a bit much for a 7-year-old. You should ask the school for a new teacher, because if you talk to the teacher first, they could get defensive.

SCHOOL should be fun...including art, music, science, etc...

In art, children will learn of symmetry, color, shape and other ideas...but, in my humble opinion, a child's creative spirit should be nurtured, even within the boundaries of the lesson being taught.
