I have a close friend who came to me today in tears saying her son was gripped round the thoat in anger by a family friend. The boy (aged 9) was told that it was to be kept between the man who did this and himself. His mum got it out of him through a lot of effort. Now she doesnt know what to do? Does she let this go or report this to the law? Her only doubt in reporting this is that she doesn't wish to upset her son any further.

the child needs not only to feel that it is okay that he told but also that telling means something will be done.... the mother needs to act immediately and call the child protection unit of her local police force.

It is NEVER okay to grab a child around the throat..... it is an assault... NO MATTER WHAT THE BOY DID!

She really should report it to protect other children from this guy. He needs to get help now for his anger issues, or he could escalate out of control, and possibly go as far as to kill someone. She also needs to get a restraining order. Any man who would wrap his hands around the throat of a nine year old child needs to be in jail. To avoid upsetting her son, she can explain to him that the man needs some help, and he can get it if she tells someone.

id report it, no doubt. no one should be laying a hand on the son for any reason other than like, a hug or something. report it, family or no. you dont know that he wont do it again to the son or to someone else.

she needs to report it, and then get a restraining order for her son, this guy does not need to be him around him since he doesnt know how to control his anger, by not reporting him then she would be keeping things open for this guy to possibly harm her son again....

REPORT it immediately. no matter how mad or close of a family member this person is they have no right to treat a kid like that, even if it was his/her own kid. she needs to report right away. how does she know it won't happen again.

if someone put their hands on my either one of my kids they would never come any where near them again. if it was just a family friend and an isolated incident there isn't too much she can do but i wouldn't let that person near me or my child ever again.
