I guess we are pretty pathetic when it comes to fish and chips. The closest we had was Arthur Treachers' Fish and Chips in my neighborhood. Unfortunately there are not many British restaurants to go to to taste the real thing. So we Americans just eat fish sticks or fish cakes with french fries. I never had mine served with potato chips.

Uh, because it's America not England? Clues in the name 'English Fish and Chips'.

It's like if you went to China and tried to order... well English fish and chips! Or any other country. Just because we share similar foods and a similar language, does not make it the same country.

And the 'chips' thing, like you said, it's because in the US, fries are chips. Don't make the mistake in thinking we speak the same language!

Oh, and I'm English, not American, I just know better than to expect to get the same food in a different country. That being said though, I'm sure there are some places in the states that do 'authentic english' fish and chips.

American food is second worst in the world. Only the U.K. is worse.

Having said that, an Englishman should bloody-well expect to find authentic English style fish and chips all over the U.S. In case you're not aware, America was founded by the English. Wouldn't you expect them to bring along just about the best (and the only edible) dish the English make?

Canda has the same origin, but with a sprinkling of French. Here in the Toronto area, there is a fish 'n chip shop in just about every square mile. And plenty more restaurants that have it on the menu.

Because that's a typical English meal. We did used to have Arthur Treacher's Fish and Chips in, like, the 60s, 70s, 80s, but it wasn't popular & eventually went out of business. We also had another fish & chips place but that, too, is gone. You need to find a a Brit-type pub-like place, of which there are few, if any. Sorry.

I grew up thinking fish and chips could only be bought and devoured at Captain Ds.
Now, if you order that, they give you two pcs. of fried fish (as I remember) but they call the 'chips' Cracklins; and they are the same: It's the breading that the fish was breaded with before frying only without the fish.
As far as I know (34 yrs old), Captain Ds in the United States Of America has never served "Fish sticks."
Oh yeah, please do not YELL AT ME WHEN YOU ARE ASKING ME A QUESTION.
Thank you.

I am 28 years old and live in Boston, and I can honestly say that fish and chips is a pretty common menu item at a lot of the restaurants that I have been to. It shouldn't be a very hard thing to find.

Thanks, that reminded me of the fast food chain, Arthur Treacher's Fish and Chips, I used to eat at as a kid growing up in St. Louis in the early 80's...I think they had real thick chips too, not fries...but I was kind of little so the fries could've just looked big then, heh heh

You have to look for "authentic" English style Pubs. They can be found, but are few and far between. What, you don't enjoy McD's Filet O Fish and french fries? LOL.

Try the Dundee Dell in Omaha, NE.
They are known for their fish and chips, as well as North America's largest selection of single malt scotch.
