The diaphragm looks kinda like a little ski cap made of a thick latex/rubber. it covers the cervix, preventing the entrance of sperm.
The sponge is made of a spongy material (not like your typical sponge though) it is immersed with spermicides and fits up in the vagina, blocking the opening of the cervix Again, preventing
the entrance of sperm.

a diaphram is given by a doctor, usually it is rubber, use it with spermicide, and can be put in about two hours prior to intercourse. a sponge is bought over the counter, (or was, i am not sure it is even used anymore), it is made of a spongy matter, usually has spermicide in it, both are fairly difficult to get into the right spot, it blocks the sperm from entering the cervix, not the best form of birth control. i still recomend condoms, as they block more than babies.
