If someone hired me to compile some pictures AND a song from a CD that they own, for a photo tribute for a funeral, would I be breaking any copyright laws? I'm not selling the song, I'm selling the service to compile a tribute for a loved one for their funeral. Thanks.

A client paying you for your service is perfectly legal. As long as you, or your client does not turn around and sell the video. When money is made directly off the product, then you will run into infringement legalities.

Because it's not a paid venue I think you could call this fair use.
There are many occasions when copyrighted works are sung/performed in churches (weddings, for example). I believe you are on safe ground.

If they were sending copies out afterward, I'd see a problem.

If they were your photos that someone had taken and changed would you think it was OK? You have broken the copyright laws MORE by editing them and using them than by just using them. Your editing will just be seen as an attempt to cover your crime.

you won't be violating the copyright law because you not are making a profit out it. You are being paid only for the service than you won't be liable. under the fair doctrine it's ok to do it because you not selling copies or charging people for it.

They are right what person would go after you for doing this. The public would turn on them so fast and ruined way to much for them, UNLESS, you were trying to make big bucks off of it.

It is done all the time for funerals and weddings. I have never heard of a lawsuit in connnection with it.

If someone HIRED you to do it, then yes, you have to pay a royalty. (If you get paid - they get paid).

If you are a family member doing a eulogy, then no.

Maybe but the chances that anyone would do anything about it are slim to none.
