Only the shadow knows..That means only the inspector knows. People are no darn good. Be polite and just ask what you need to do to fix the problem.....They can give you H....if they choose. Or they can ask if you had proper contractors and make you buy a permit..Depends on your state, city, county etc and The building inspector. Be humble

Get a copy of the building code for your city, and then remove all violating elements. That's all you can do. You can do it now, or you can do it later and pay a fine. You could try putting in a bunch of boxes all over to make it look like a storage room or something.

It depends on your local ordinances, and / or local property covenants. In most jurisdictions, if the "unit" is connected to your own dwelling unit by a door, it is not a "separate dwelling unit" subject to local zoning controls. Only if it is completely cordoned off, like an apartment you would rent to a stranger, is it considered a separate dwelling unit. IT IS NOT ILLEGAL TO HOUSE YOUR PARENTS, OR IN-LAWS, IN YOUR HOME, AND TO PROVIDE THEM WITH THEIR OWN LIVING CONVENIENCES. Local ordinances vary, YMMV.

Put it on wheels, that way it will be seen as temporary accomodation and you'll be ok.
