There are many subways in Calcutta (Present day KOLKATA).
The biggest is the Metro Railway - Underground Railway service. Operation started in 1984 and Construction completed in 1995. Total length more than 16 kilometer.

Other subways include -
Multi lane underground walking footpath in Howrah station. Constructed in 1986.
Subway at Sealdah station - First constructed around 1985.
Modified in 2005.

However the oldest under ground path was constructed below river Ganga near Howrah bridge in British period for Electrical Cable laying. This tunnel is deep enough to enable people to walk through it.

The Metro Railway Kolkata was constructed progressively from 1972 to 1995, Phase-I a length of 3.04 Kms. from Esplanade to Bhowanipur having been completed in 1984. Full length of 16.45 Kms was commissioned in 1995.
