What kind of diapers do you want to make? I purchased some diapers, then used them as a pattern. I made fitted diapers based on Kissaluvs and Wonderoos (I do not recommend Wonderoos). I used flannel (I raided my mom's stash for free fabric and bought remnants). You might call it brushed cotton. For the inside layers, I used an old bath towel and some plain flannel. Google "diaper sewing tutorials" for some good instructions.

i used a bunch of flannel recieving blankets when i first started sewing diapers. We got way too many as hand-me downs and they are too small to make good blankets for long.
I really like to use cotton velour and hemp flannel too. There are so man good ways to make diapers on the cheap. i can't understand why anyone would buy and throw away things you need so often. seem like a waste of money to me!-)
