Definitely in the washing machine. When a dyed fabric is newly purchased, and washed in warm-hot water, it will most likely run. You should either wash it alone the first time, or definitely in cold water!
Vinegar added to the wash water will prevent it, and set the dye so it won't fade. About 1 cup to a good size load, or 1/4 cup to a small load with one-two of the new garments in it. Good Luck!

This usually happens in the wash. If you have something you are not sure of it's always best to hand wash in cold water. After a couple of washings the color should "set" and the dye running should not be a concern.

Mostly when washing, But it can also go onto clothes in the dryer, because while the clothes are wet, they do touch each other. Thats why when you wash clothes, they should be separated.

washing but a really bad item can transfer during the first moments of drying too, while things are very wet. woolite has just made a cold water wash thats supposed to keep dye from one item transferring to others.
