JPG is short for JPEG which stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group. JPG is a commonly used standard method of compression for photographic images.

GIF is short for Graphics Interchange Format. It is also used for images.

Both image formats are commonly used on computers. Many digital cameras use the JPG format when taking pictures.
You can view them using any rudimentary viewer including mspaint or windows picture and fax viewer. A default installation of windowsXP will probably not show you the JPG or GIF file extensions when you are browsing your files because it will block extensions of known file types. You can fix that by doing this: In Windows Explorer, Tools -> Folder Options -> View tab -> uncheck 'Hide extensions for known file types'.
