Big question! I would like to distinguish the disasters in two:
1. Natural disaster
Earthquake,Hurricane,Tsunami happened lately in Indonesia is for sure inevitable.Thats a nature thing where no one in this world will know exactly when it is going to happen-I know we have weather, wave or hurricane forecast but no one in this world could avoid such things when its strike.
Flood, landslide also happen so many times in many areas of Indonesia-in this case it happened mostly because there are a lot of forest that have been exploited by industries and wealthy businessman who never realize how important the trees are for the living creatures.
2. "Human" Disaster : Planes, Ships,Boats,Trains just happened every so often. This beautiful country has been poisoned by corruption, greedyness, and lack of responsibility . Many carriers are too old and there is not enough maintenance on them.Boat, trains and ships are overloaded with too many passengers and the maintenance also has never been good enough. The fund for the maintenance often goes to the wrong direction as to the "boss" pocket. Many people work for a salary which is below the minimum wages standard and they become ignorant and dont want to know about others and some people are just to greedy to have more and more money therefore the fund that has to go to maintenance work has gone to some "wealthy bureaucrate's maintenance".

1) Indonesia is a doomed place, full of heathens; even though God loves everybody, whether they're ''good'' or not.

2) Indonesia lies in the so-called ''Ring Of Fire'' thing.

3) Indonesia does not have the important, main facilities for people. I mean that like ships or something, they just load in as many people as possible and then the ship will sink because of the overweight.

4) Indonesia has too many domestic conflicts.

5) There is too much corruption.

6) There is too much poverty.

7) The country doesn't have enough money to improve or build facilities like to protect people from the forces of nature, or to give poor people housing and stuff.

8) Indonesia does not and cannot enjoy its profits. The country is actually rich because of the oil, spices and other natural products. If the profits didn't go to those ''government people'', the country would at least be quite OK... Not OK, but maybe much better than now!

9) Because of the pollution, Indonesia also contributes to global warming! When I was small (80ies) there were barely no cars riding around! Of course there was, but not so many as it is now! I think that it won't be long that Indonesia will be hit by a tsunami again, because Antarctica will eventually melt.

10) I think that the people are not intelligent enough. They need a lot of international help, but even then I think that it won't still do.

I agree with a lot of the previous answerers when they point out that Indonesia geographically makes her more prone to natural disasters such as earthquakes and mudslides. Japan is prone to earthquakes and tsunamis too, and yet they have managed to limit the no of casualties. Having said that, if you're just going to blame everything on mother nature, than you're no better than the current mayor of Jakarta. He blamed the recent flooding in Jakarta to mother nature, it's beyond his power to handle this. Well, that'd be true if:
a. He did not build the leeves and dams to contain the flood like he promised to, and instead used the fund to build a very ineffective transportation system.
b. He did not control the amount of construction projects being awarded, causing overbuilding and overcutting of trees that are required to prevent flood and mudslides.

Ineffective politicans + Ineffective policies and enforcements anywhere is a recipe for disaster.

Some are natural disaster which is beyond control. Some are technical or human error which can be avoided. The natural disaster like volcano, earthquake and tsunami happen because Indonseia geographically located in the ring of these dangerous areas. There are things related to human error like no proper law and regulation to be followed by people.
