What is the woodwork, and why are people coming out of it?

Because in America, every dog has his day. My guess is that when people start coming out of the woodwork, society is "turning over" and American culture is undergoing a changing of the guard. It reaches a critical mass, and if you are different from the changing guard, you start to notice.
