There are two steps to take before you can activate that phone on Cingular. The true owner of that phone must contact cingular and let them know that they will be giving that phone to another person and also to release the esn serial number on that back of the phone. This way the phone and serial number won't be tied to the owner. Secondly make sure that all outstanding balances are paid off by the owner. Sometimes cell phones are deactivated because the customer didn't pay their bill on time or there is a balance left on the account. Once that is resolved, you can create a new account with your name at Cingular using that phone and a new sim card for your cell phone.

If you still plan to use cingular all you should have to do is replace the SIM Card found in the battery pack with your own if you have an existing Cingular account. If you do not have Cingular yet Id say get Verizon instead.

If you have Verizon already you will not be able to use the Cingular phone due to the difference in programing in the two phones.

Cingular uses SMS programing while Verizon uses GSM
