My transcript is really really ugly. I got average grades in 1st year, horrible grades in 2nd year (that put me in academic probation), and extremely horrible grades in 3rd year. I was required to withdraw from the university after 3rd year because I was getting grades of mostly 30-40% and even a 0% and a 2% for a couple of subjects. The university requires me to complete a year in a college before reapplying. I am doing that now and getting relatively better grades and am pulling my life together. I now have a goal of reapplying and finishing my degree, then applying to teachers college and maybe graduate school after that. I'm just wondering if my past grades on my transcript will hinder me from getting into those programs. If I am readmitted to the university and I finish my 3rd and 4th year with stellar grades, will my past grades matter and affect my chances? I would appreciate your opinion. Thanks.

Of course it matters. The fact you did poorly before is in your academic records and it will follow you around for rest of your academic life. This is college. You are responsible for your own actions/grades.

But guess what.... following through with your plan will put you in far better place than if you didn't. One way to look at this is, you have everything to gain by retruning and completing with your initial intentions.

Further you go, graduate school, etc, earlier grade will matter less and less. Your chances? You really need to discuss this with your prospective school's admissions counselors.

Good luck!

Just make sure that you achieve really really good grades in your 3rd and 4th year and you will be fine because usually, graduation averages and entry averages are calculated on your two last years. Also, when looking at your transcript and seeing that you've made a remarkable improvement in your grades, admissions will be convinced that you have become responsible for your academics and can succeed. In these 2 years, achieve grades that are way above what most people are achieving and I am pretty sure your past grades will most likely be overlooked when applying for programs and such. :) Go for it!

In most colleges, if you retake the classes you failed and pass, you will get the new grade and the original grade will be deleted from the transcript. That should help your GPA.

Talk to a counselor about your specific grades and plan on taking all the classes again. Any failing grade remaining on your transcript will bring down your GPA.

It depends on the program! All the programs I was looking into only looked at your last 60 credits. Research them and study for the GRE. Nothing is every impossible....
