Well... First of all, as said above an engagement ring should be at least two months salary. If this is all you can afford based on that information, then you're fine. You don't want to marry a woman who would expect you to break yourself to buy her a ring. However, now days, 1/4 of a carat is pretty small. If you can splurge, then do it. It's a ring she will wear everyday for the rest of her life. Second of all, marquise cut is not the most popular cut right now. I - personally - am not a fan nor is any of my friends. (Princess cut is probably the most popular cut right now.) So, perhaps check on other cuts. In case you don't know, you should go by the guide of "the four c's of selecting a diamond". It includes:
1. Cut
2. Clarity
3. Carat
4. Color
You didn't mention color in your description & that is a major factor you should consider. Check out this website.

It has the 4 c's and explains them all in detail with charts to show you where your diamond stands in relation to others. Just keep in mind that you don't want to buy anything that has an obvious inclusion or ugly color to the naked eye. Ask the salesperson at the store to show you a ring with a lot of "fire" in it. These are the most brilliant & beautiful. Good luck!!!

YUCK! First of all, marquise cut diamonds are the epitome of tacky and are worn by trailer trash baby mamas ONLY. Second of all.... 1/4 carat???? That's two months of your salary???? What are you, shift manager at Taco Bell??? 1.5 carats is the minimum you should give when asking her to spend the REST of HER LIFE WITH YOU!!!! Propose with that if you want to... if she loves you she will say yes, but she will undoubtedly be dissapointed and grow to resent your lack of class.
