Do you know what Manatees (also know as sea cows) are ?
Ppl thought they we're humans with tales, I guess because they couldn't see them that good.

What is a Marmaid? Mermaids are part of folklore but don't exist in reality. Barmaids are real and can be seen in bars around the world. Is a Marmaid a combination of a mermaid and a barmaid?

It still ceases to amaze me how people can take a simple spelling error in what someone says and turn it around to make fun of the person.
For your question however, all myths had an origin, but I don't think mermaids in the traditional sense you mean were ever real; more than likely, they were a kind of mutated fish or undiscovered fish at the time that fishermen caught and thought were mermaids until scientists could examine it properly.
