Only after Bush is out of office will they get a fighting chance to rebuild.
If a similar thing happened in Crawford, TX it be better now than it was before.

I don't believe any such thing. I cannot believe that the people of America will ever let it become another Afghanistan. I hope very much that anyone who loves New Orleans and values it will see that it is worth defending. I believe that the US army knows how that can be achieved. New Orleans can be rebuilt, and made worth living in, and this can and will be a contagious and worthy fever which others will catch, and snap their fingers, and make it so again.
Not only for the cultural, architectural, gourmet and musical tradition of that great and temporarily lost city, but for the happy memories of the many, many people who spent some time there. Say the Capitol relocated to NJ. Who would really regret that? The world would adapt, the pope used to live in Avignon, the capital of Canada can alter. Not a huge change.
My thoughts? Well, there is Venice. Yet. Still.
There is always Venice. Oh, there are people who will say that Venice is a ruin, it stinks, they will never go there.
Who has not heard of Venice? If it went under the waves tomorrow, the most important poets and writers of our time would only serve to remind us of what the world has lost, of where we can never again visit. So, there will always be a New Orleans.
And then there is the US? Let's see how that goes. In three hundred years from now, you should know that people will very much care how that goes. But here and now, NO represents - not so much a lost city - as the lost soul of the US. But if New Orleans is lost to future visitors, the world will know that America stopped caring about that port and its people, and its culture. Shortly afterwards, there will be a long period during which the entire world begins to lose respect for a proud and respected country, because it cared so little about abandoned projects, and huddled masses, and fellow humanity. That will be the vital point in history when they openly insulted their citizens instead of envying them.
When they saw that the US knew the price of everything, the value of nothing, and were not ashamed to let that be known. So, I hope very much that the citizens say NO to such a tragic process. Their chances could be a lot worse - there are beautiful German cities which were totally, brick by brick, rebuilt. After two damaging wars when nobody else gave a ---- if they lived or survived, and they had very little to eat. They got on with what they cared for, and so will the people of NO. That's my hope - that our neighbors know what they have almost lost, and how very much they stand to recapture by aiding a city in distress. One of their own.

It will never be the city it was before Kitrina, but it will eventually evolve into something other than a disaster zone. It would have been nice if the Bush administration would have taken like one tenth of one percent of what they have stolen on the Iraq war and rebuilt the place. You would think New Orleans's infra structure would have been at least as important as Bagdad's, but so far, the Federal government seems to simply not care about the city.
What a disgrace for America.

Well it is a city underwater what do you think will happen. But look at it this way when was the last hurricane that hit New Orleans before 2005? I mean it could happen tomorrow or it could happen in 100 years no one knows

I think they will come back, better than ever but it will take time. The government in New Orleans, needs to work harder at getting rid of the crime and concentrating on their people. It was a beautiful city before and can be again, but not unless people in power there are willing to take responsibility and action to make it a place people want to live.

I'm afraid things look pretty grim for the Big Easy. It's INEVITABLE that another whopper of a storm will hit there sooner or later; and with fewer people willing to risk getting wiped out, and fewer Insurance Companies willing to pay off claims in such a risky location- it doesn't look too good. One of these years- Mardi Gras is going to be in Baton Rouge...

They will try to rebuild, but rebuilding below sea level so close to the coast in hurricane alley is monumentally stupid. At some point, nature will drive this point home with a vengeance.
