Chavez does gain political points in his own country and across the world for taking a (almost entirely verbal) stand against the hegemony of the United States. However, Chavez was popular long before he started bad-mouthing Bush.

He doesn't actually spend nearly as much time "blaming the US for all his countries problems" as the US-based media would have you believe. We can be a little self-centered in this country.

This comes to play with the Iran thing as well. Chavez is trying to be a real buddy with ANYONE he can. When you don't bow down and do whatever the US tells you, you need all the help you can get. Ahmadinejad is in this same position. The two get along simply because they have both been labeled enemies by the US, not because they have much else in common. If your question is meant to imply that they are plotting some kind of war against the US or something, there is simply no evidence whatsoever for such a conspiracy.

It's a typical tactic used by autocratic rulers. If things are crappy in a country, the people will tend to blame the leaders first. The leaders will blame powerful, outside forces and then say they are the only thing standing against those outside forces.

The people then are united under the leader and redirect their anger at a nonexistent threat....putty in the rulers' hands.

Hey, first I wouldn't worry about little countries. US is buying large portions of oil from them and all its politics in the "air".
Their president is just a rebel and a big mouth that means no harm. Let them do what they want in their own country, the back yard, that is! They all love the dollar, don't they?
You can feel safe in Venezuela as long you don't criticized them,
they have the right...
Let solve our own problems first...right at home.
